If you think that yoga is only about zen, spirituality and finding your inner peace, think again. Founded in 2012, Singapore-born Yoga Movement seeks to redefine the yoga industry and what it takes to practice yoga, making it more inclusive, agnostic and community-centric. Last weekend saw the highly anticipated launch of Yoga Movement’s (YM) Orchard flagship studio on Singapore’s Handy Road — its biggest and most exciting yoga studio yet.

Growing to one of the largest boutique fitness operators in Southeast Asia with over 100,000 members since its inception, 25,000 bums on mats each month, and a vast online presence, the brand is truly walking the talk. The homegrown fitness-lifestyle brand oozes accessibility, delivering a unique experience fusing multi-levelled workouts, hearty refreshments, and a like-minded community.

The new flagship studio channels YM’s signature good vibes, warmth of service and sense of community that loyal members know and love, all across a massive 6,000 square foot space. It ups the ante with stunning, spacious interiors featuring seven-metre-high ceilings, finishings of warm wood and splashes of terrazzo. Fans and neighbours will love YM’s new coffee bar and a chillout patio overlooking the bustle of Orchard Road for post-yoga hangs.

Signature yoga classes

The studio offers the seven signature YM class types as well as Pop Up classes, YM’s version of themed classes. All of these classes are multi-levelled, catering to newbies and seasoned practitioners alike. Those just starting out can join a Basics class to get acquainted with foundational yoga postures, while those wanting to work up a sweat can opt for the more dynamic Power Flow or one of the Hot classes. With over 80 classes weekly, the Orchard studio expects to see over 1,600 people bending, stretching and de-stressing in their practice rooms and grabbing a cuppa at the studio’s coffee bar week in, week out.

A haven for design geeks 

Intentional design is the starting point of all YM studios. The Orchard flagship studio is the ultimate reflection of how the brand has grown, as well as the space it holds in the lives of over 100,000 YM members. Created almost as an antithesis to the tranquillity of the traditional yoga studio, the YM space exudes a sense of vibrance, comfort and warm intimacy. Think of it like your best friend’s tastefully designed apartment — drop in at any time, enjoy the stunning décor, and be welcomed with open (socially distanced) arms.

YM members (affectionately known as YM FAM) can enjoy their classes in one of the studio’s three airy practice rooms — two with hip hop-inspired names as an ode to the brand’s identity that’s rooted in culture and music; and one that’s solely dedicated to the brand’s Teacher Training arm, YMTT200. Members can expect striking features such as custom-designed wallpaper from local brand, Layer Play, as well as floor to ceiling windows. A long hallway adorned with a luscious tropical print takes members to the spacious changing room facilities, which include huge bathrooms you can run laps in, and a total of 11 luxurious separate showers for women and men. Other aesthetic details include Yoga Movement’s dreamy terrazzo walls and rustic terracotta brick tiles.

Yoga Movement’s first-ever coffee concept

Following the success of the Grounded by CMCR concept at Yoga Movement’s Robertson Quay location, the brand is getting their own foot in the local coffee scene. Yoga Movement’s first-ever coffee concept created by the YM FAM, for the YM FAM makes up an integral part of the new studio. The coffee brand is supported by long-time partner Common Man Coffee Roasters and continues Yoga Movement’s ongoing collaboration with local culinary heroes, providing quality brews and fuel for the day — best enjoyed on their breezy patio overlooking the bustle of Orchard Road.
