Best bakeries to get sourdough bread in Singapore
5 brilliant bread experts offering top notch sourdough
Text: Rachel L
The circuit breaker period saw the rise of numerous circuit bakers as many turned to the therapeutic motions of baking to pass time. Amidst the wide range of indulgent desserts and mouth-watering bakes produced, the sourdough loaf was a common feature on Instagram stories as home-bakers proudly showcased their latest creations. However, as we begin to open up for the second time, making your own sourdough bread might become more of a hassle than a hobby. Thankfully, Singapore has no shortage of artisan bakeries and we’ve rounded up some of our favourites to get your weekly dose of sourdough.
Named after the humble yet integral baker’s workbench where the magic of the baking process occurs, this neighbourhood bakery started its journey in the midst of the pandemic. Reflecting the communal spirit of the baker’s bench, its cosy exterior and ever present aroma of fresh bakes make it the perfect spot for customers to chat over a cup of coffee and a sweet treat. The spread at Baker’s Bench Bakery offers signature sourdough loaves that include the versatile-staple Humble, fluffy Milk Toast, nutty Multiseed and popular Cranberry & Oat Porridge Loaf. Many of Baker’s Bench Bakery loaves are also vegan-friendly and all their bread flours are ethically sourced, sustainable and chemical free. Apart from these, the bakery also serves up a delicious assortment of sourdough croissants, bagels and bakes.

Just like its name suggests, Starter Lab is a bakery bursting with experimentation, creativity and bold flavours. The store is the first international branch of its Bali-originated headquarters and a product of its mission to spread the craft of breadmaking in the region. In the middle of the bustle of Havelock Road, Starter Lab centers on the traditional baking by focusing their production process around the sourdough “starter” to create wholesome, naturally-leavened bread and pastries. Their airy and aromatic Rosemary Lemon and Sea Salt Sourdough marries the fragrance of rosemary olive oil with the punchy tang of lemon zest. On the other hand, their Danish Rye is more densely packed and filled with nourishing seeds that make it great for digestion. The Starter Lab recommends using thin slices of this loaf to build a Smorrebrod (a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich).
