Last Minute Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day This Year

Don’t have anything planned for Mother’s Day yet? Here are 5 last minute ideas to celebrate your mom this Sunday.

When it comes to buying a gift for mom this Mother’s Day, you might share the struggle I’m currently facing – you have an Asian mom. They’re notoriously tricky to shop for. They’re either too picky or harp on about not needing a gift. Every year, I present my mom with a shiny piece of jewellery or take her out for a lovely brunch at a cute café and get told that I shouldn’t have wasted my money.

This year, however, we’re celebrating Mother’s Day the right way. By focusing on health and wellness, here are 5 ways to celebrate your mom, especially if you have no time to book a fancy dinner.

1. Whip up a healthy brunch
Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day – Asian moms harp about this old saying, but there is some sense to it. It’s crucial for replenishing our depleted glucose levels and provides essential nutrients to fuel our day ahead. So this Mother’s Day, show your mom that you listen to her teachings by making her a breakfast of champions.

You can opt for a sinful pancake brunch loaded with butter and maple syrup or a healthy superfood-packed acai bowl for this special day. Either way, you can include these Top 5 mind-boosting ingredients or check out this Apple and Carrot Bircher Muesli by Sam Rice, the mastermind behind the UK Sunday Times best-selling book The Midlife Kitchen. It incorporates hemp seeds, rolled oats, and carrots, ingredients chock full of vitamins and fibres to keep you full.

2. Embark on a reinvigorating yoga session

Whether you’re looking for a morning Vinyasa flow, a much-needed stretch after sitting at your desk all week, or a Yin session to slow things down before bedtime, there are a host of yoga studios in Singapore for you to mix and match according to your intentions.

As many of our moms are sleep deprived — as is the nation in general — Yoga Nidra is the perfect activity to kick off your morning. Translating literally as yoga sleep, it’s a powerful technique in which you learn to relax consciously. In this meditative state, you’ll be somewhere between being awake and asleep, the ideal state for learning and receiving intuition from the unconscious mind. This yogic practice has been gaining traction as a form of stillness and mindfulness meditation. Health benefits even include getting better sleep. So if your mom is a light sleeper and an insomniac like mine, this is a class that’s definitely making it onto our Mother’s Day itinerary. You can even give her a voucher so that she can pop by for a later session.

3. Spa Day at home

A pamper day with your mom doesn’t have to break the bank with a little thought. Light a few candles, put on the diffuser with some soothing essential oils, and get a heated fluffy bathrobe ready. There are also many at-home-spa facial kits you can purchase to make your mom feel like a queen - check out our top 5 skincare kits for facial spas at home here.

If your mother is anything like mine, they might prefer a foot massage from expert therapists to soothe the aches away from being on their feet all day. Aleyda Mobile Spa offers spa treatments to pamper and heal from the comfort of your own home without compromising on their strict standards. Other treatments to enjoy at home include blowouts and facials, so don’t forget to enlist in their services.

4. Pop open a bottle of organic wine

Sharing a bottle of special wine over a deep and meaningful chat with Mom is priceless, even though many of us Asians tend to be intolerant to alcohol because of sulfites and other preservatives. Conventional winemakers add additional sulfites to help keep wines stable and prevent spoilage. On the other hand, natural winemakers rely on native yeast to set off natural fermentation, potentially making natural wines a better option for all of us plagued by the cursed Asian flush.

Over the years, the rise of sustainability in foods has made getting your hands on organic wine high on the agenda. On the one hand, experts claim that the natural winemaking process is better for our planet since synthetic fertilizers and pesticides have been eliminated, purportedly lessening damage to the health of the soil. On the other, the massive carbon footprint of imported wines is a major issue, particularly in a country like Singapore, where almost all wine travels a long way to get to us. Thankfully, there are a number of wine shops boasting expertly curated selections of natural wines produced right here in Singapore. So show your mom some love and get her a fancy bottle to break out the next time she starts asking (and stressing) about your love life. You’ll thank me later.

5. Get her on a vitamin subscription

Like it or not, most women start going through menopause between ages 45 and 55. One major cause and problem of menopause is the drop in production of estrogen and progesterone – two hormones essential for women. A lack of these hormones can cause weight gain, osteoporosis, hair loss, and even spark mental health issues like mental fog, anxiety, and even depression. As much as they’d hate to admit it, your mother is probably going through menopause or counting down the years till it catches up to her. Getting her on supplements could help mitigate the worst of the symptoms. But, of course, navigating the world of supplements can be daunting.

For those who want to eliminate the guesswork out of vitamins and supplements, these subscription services provide detailed quizzes backed by advanced, research-supported algorithms to create a personalized regime for your everyday needs. Some services like The Nue Co. connects you with experts to track your progress and offer support throughout your entire supplement journey. Get your mom a yearly subscription of quality supplements delivered straight to her doorstep to show that you care.

It can be a real challenge for many of us to find a novel way of celebrating this special occasion for mom each year. But at the end of the day, it’s all about a little thought and care. So whether you end up doing something big or low key to honour your mother, it’s the time and thought that counts.
