The quest for eternal youth and anti-ageing never ends. We search for how to get rid of wrinkles, how to get rid of lines under eyes, how to get tighter skin and an even skin tone, and God forbid if we start to get jowls. A healthy diet, sleep and exercise are key ingredients to a youthful complexion, but as we age, our collagen production decreases and there’s only so much they can do. I want to grow old somewhat gracefully. Could Profhilo be the secret to how to look younger in Singapore?

In my late 30’s I’m still staying away from invasive surgery as well as fillers, face threads and scary-sounding vampire facials as they are just too, well, invasive. But if you offer me injections of all-natural hyaluronic acid to boost collagen, plump skin and prevent my jowls going south? It’s a yes please from me!

Enter Profhilo. This non-invasive cosmetic procedure has only been on the market for a handful of years but has had enough trials to clarify it’s safe and A-okay. It involves moisturising injections of hyaluronic acid on the face (and neck if required) to rejuvenate tired or sunken skin, improve texture, and restore vitality. But does it really work? I decided to give it a shot, literally, at my favourite skin doctor in town, Dr Valentine Low at Paragon Medical Centre.

The one thing I like about Dr V (as he’s affectionately known by his cult following of clients) is that he never pushes treatments. I go to him regularly for skin lasering as I get hyperpigmentation and when he suggested I try Profhilo, I knew I’d be in safe hands on my quest for how to look younger surgery-free.

What is Profhilo?

Simply put, Profhilo is an injectable solution of injectable hyaluronic acid which boosts skin firmness and fills out wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and holds up to 1,000 times its own weight in hydration (hence the plumping) and which many of us pop on our skin every morning in a serum solution. Unbeknown to many, hyaluronic acid is actually a natural substance our body produces on its own, so it’s totally organic for anti-ageing.

Where can it be used?

As it’s been touted for firming, tightening and lifting, its generally used for sunken cheeks and jowls, eye bags, areas that are sagging and heading south and wrinkly necks. Additionally, Profhilo developed the Bio Aesthetic Point (BAP) method which allows for an accurate and effective treatment with minimal pain and downtime. BAP is essentially an application technique designed especially for the lower half of the face (and neck). The five BAPs on the lower face are specially selected areas where there are no large blood vessels or nerve branches; when injected here, you maximise the diffusion of Profhilo’s hybrid HA complex while minimising the risk of bruising.

What happens in the actual treatment?

It’s super straightforward. To make the treatment painless, Dr V applied a numbing cream across the injection areas and we waited around 20 minutes for it to kick in. He then injected the five BAP points on each side of my face in minutes and it was done. Simple as. It did feel numb and tingle for a couple of hours afterwards, but that soon went. I didn’t have any after effects and I could go on with my day as normal — you could definitely squeeze this into your lunch break.

Does Profhilo work?

Surprisingly, yes! I particularly wanted it for around my mouth, to plump and prevent any serious jowls kicking in. I immediately saw the results an hour afterwards as my skin looked plumper. A couple of weeks later the lines around my mouth looked significantly less.

Experts recommend another round of Profhilo after two weeks for deeper lines and the entire treatment should last up six months.  It costs around SGD 1000 for one round of Profhilo at Dr Valentine Low’s which is a competitive rate as most other places charge similar.
