Getting our travel fix right now is tricky. We at The Soothe will unashamedly admit to missing the hum of a new city, the gentle sound of waves lapping on a paradise beach, or the tinkle of a panpipe as we relax into a massage. Hooray then for luxury travel brand Singita, South Africa, who have come up with the genius idea of creating a safari soundtrack — a highly curated playlist called Sounds of Singita — that transports you to the heart of the African plains and wildlife.

The magical sounds of wildebeest wandering the plains, chirping birds, and animals wading in the water are coupled with mindfulness meditation and music to help you escape while borders remain closed. And while you may not have to board a plane to enjoy it, you can certainly reap the host of physical and mental benefits that  guided mediation and sound therapy have been proven to provide.

Sound therapy from Africa

Sounds of Singita, Singita’s unique interpretation of sound therapy and guided meditation features eight different soundtracks that have been carefully produced to help improve sleep, provide calm, and facilitate mindful meditation. These various forms of visualisation and meditation have been found by researchers to reduce  stress, fatigue, pain and depression. Another study also found that focusing on an experience or sounds can help reduce anxiety.

The sounds of South Africa provide the listener with a spectrum of special moments — the soothing calmness of a river flow, the thrilling excitement of a lion’s roar, and the revitalising chirps and song calls that herald a new day. While taking in the din, you’re accompanied by a relaxing voice that guides you in your mindfulness meditation session.

Meditation for better sleep quality

“Better Sleep” escorts you through a 20-minute meditation that promotes better sleep quality. While listening, we were taken through a breathing exercise that encouraged our body to relax and our mind to be free of distractions. The call of a Fiery-Necked Nightjar and tranquil sounds of animals made for the perfect bedtime wind down.

Corroborating our sound sleep experience is scientific research revealing a positive link between guided meditation, visualisation and the alleviation of insomnia, pain, and anxiety. And while research has been not conclusive, scientists believe that a peaceful and calming scenario helps to establish a zen state of mind, fostering a headspace for us to cope with mental, emotional, and physical stress.

Sounds of Singita is just the start of the luxury travel brand’s steps into sound therapy. We’re already looking forward to where they’ll be aurally whisking us to next.
