Valentine’s Day: an essential holiday dedicated to love and romance, or an overly commercialised money-making mission, powered by Hallmark? Whatever school of thought you fall into, it’s 2021, and with little to celebrate — and no chance of hopping off on a romantic getaway — we’ve got to get a splash of passion where we can. If you don’t fancy celebrating Valentine’s Day 2021 with a fancy restaurant, or if it feels like too much effort to shave your legs and put on heels (remember those?), we recommend embracing the much-underrated romantic date night at home.

Here are our tips and date night ideas to make it a bit special (coupled up, or spending it solo):

Say it with pizza

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the way to almost everyone’s heart is through their stomach, so top of our stay-home-Valentine’s-Day checklist is, naturally, food.

If you’re confident that your culinary clout will impress your date, you can check out The Soothe’s approved list of nourishing cookbooks, which include everything from plant-based dishes to encourage more mindful eating, to easy comfort foods.

If domestic prowess is less your forte, many of our favourite haunts in Singapore are offering takeaway or delivery options to make your home date night extra special. We’ve been eyeing up the Get Some Kit (SGD 300) by the Lucali BYGB team, which includes pizza, pasta, salad, chocolate truffles, Champagne, and wine. If that isn’t enough to set the mood, they’re also throwing in a candle, cute blindfold, and a specially curated playlist to really set the scene for your romantic night.

Other at-home options include the ‘Love You Till The Cows Come Home’ Love Lock-In Date Night Bundle (SGD 88) from Publico which includes a choice of pizza, pasta, side dish and a bottle of prosecco; or the Burnt Ends Meals for 2 (SGD 187.25 — 267.50) which includes a selection of menu favourites.

Scent the scene

Flowers are synonymous with romance, and a key ingredient in any at home date night. Creating your own bouquet will add a super personal touch (and save you a few $!).

If flowers aren’t your thing — or if your partner is an allergy sufferer (!) — then aromatherapy is another way to set the mood. Aromatherapy is the practice of inhaling essential oils with the goal of improving overall wellbeing; nutmeg and patchouli have both been shown to have aphrodisiac qualities, so consider incorporating if you’re keen to spice up your Valentine’s Day.

Dress the table

If you’re planning to stay home, adding little touches to your Valentine’s Day table setup will help make things feel extra special; we love these Le Crueset Stoneware Mini Heart Bowls (SGD 97) and Taylor B crystal Candle Holders (SGD 69) to really nail the Valentine’s Day interior vibe for your home date night ideas.

Love yourself

Last, but certainly not least, set some time to love yourself this Valentine’s Day, whether that’s by creating a hotel-worthy at home spa or spending time focusing on gratitude
