Amongst one of the world’s top health drinks is kombucha, an ancient fermented drink which has been around for centuries. Simple yet effective, it’s made from green or black tea, yeast and bacteria which when brewed and set aside for a week or more, results in a fizzy, gut-health-boosting beverage.

Kombucha is rich in probiotics and contains antioxidants that can kill harmful bacteria. Advocates say it helps your digestion, rids your body of toxins and boosts your energy. Melissa Mak, founder of kombucha brand Fizzicle explains that there are “four main benefits — better gut health, immunity, mood and joints”. “Gut health is integral to our mental wellbeing as well as our physical health, our gut is our second brain, where 90% of serotonin aka brain happy hormone is produced” according to Melissa.

Kombucha’s power to aid digestion comes from the fact that fermentation makes probiotics which help with diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). “While no panacea, kombucha is one of the few things that you can trade in for your soda, cocktail or beer” Melissa adds. “It’s a simple first step to supporting gut health and making a choice towards a healthier lifestyle.”

Here are some of The Soothe’s favourite brands, and where to find them:

Mel’s Kombucha Bar

Brewed with organic cane sugar as well as a mix of organic loose-leaf black & green tea, the kombucha at Mel’s Kombucha Bar promises a refreshing and delicious treat without spiking your sugar levels. We are told that no additional sugar is added after the fermentation process either. The home business offers a selection of 7 flavours, from Strawberry Mint and Ginger Tumeric to less orthodox combinations like their Pineapple Chilli flavour.
