Looking for career guidance or to change career can be stressful at the best of times, not least in the midst of a pandemic panic. With uncertainty surrounding us, it’s perhaps no surprise that increasing numbers of astro-curious people have been turning to spirituality for guidance in life, and that includes using horoscopes and astrology signs for career advice. Yes — if you want to find your passion, the future of your career could be written in the stars.

Feeling starry-eyed

The “mystical services market” is booming; including astrology and tarot card reading, its value has been estimated at USD 2.2 billion. The booming astro app Co-Star has over 6.5 million users and more than USD 6 million in venture funding. According to Google Trends, searches for “birth chart” and “astrology” both hit five-year peaks in 2020, with the whole world looking for answers on everything from when to get the loo rolls in to how to know if redundancy is imminent.

Josephine Corcoran is someone who believes that astrology signs have a direct influence on our career and job success. With a career in marketing, recruitment, learning and development (and a Masters in the Psychology of Coaching under her belt), she initially started studying astrology for fun alongside her full-time work.

It quickly became obvious to her that blending traditional psychometric profiling tools with astrology signs was extremely valuable. “It’s a technique that really helps in supporting people as they connect with their truth and realise their purpose,” Josephine says.

She decided to create a unique approach to career guidance, blending traditional coaching tools with what’s written in the stars. Initially, she took a gently-gently approach to introducing the idea to her clients who came to her for leadership coaching sessions. “I’d begin by using tools that were familiar to them, such as Myers-Briggs, before bringing in the astrological element and showing them how the two can work concurrently.”

Whilst Josephine’s clients were at first sceptical to embrace what they saw as the ‘woo woo’ guidance, over the last few years there has been a shift in attitude, with increasing numbers of people turning to the wisdom of astrology. “Ultimately, we want to feel in control, especially in times of economic uncertainty. Astrology offers tools that bring clarity we’d otherwise lack,” she says.

How does astrology guide our career?

Today, the starting process for Josephine’s coaching clients is understanding where they are currently and what they want to create. She then fuses psychological and astrological charts and tools together to break down each client’s core strengths. Through her work she creates a professional “Soul Blueprint” — an executive summary of their innate abilities, needs, values, growth areas and purpose created via a unique combination of psychometric profiling, astrological signatures in their Birth Chart, and intuitive coaching conversations.

Throughout her sessions, Josephine notes the importance of self-care of mind, body, and soul. “It’s important for me to understand my client’s lifestyle habits such as what they eat, their physical activity, and how they feed their mind,” she says. “From this I can best ensure that they’re not decreasing their own energy to energetic frequency by engaging in habits or people that are unhealthy.”

Daily breathwork is something she encourages as it gives clients the space to search for inner-knowledge and relate that to their true career calling. “I break down their abilities and strengths — for example, maybe they’re naturally creative, or very good at listening — and help them to realise what they need to surround themselves with in order to deliver the best version of themselves,” she says.

Find your passion

Josephine explains that right now is her busiest period when it comes to spiritual career advice due to the goal and intention-setting that takes place at the start of the new year. However, she warns that there are some movements in the stars right now that we need to be mindful of.

On December 22 2020, Jupiter and Saturn (the so-called ‘social planets’ due to the fact that they are visible to the naked eye) appeared to join forces, despite being thousands of miles apart. This phenomenon, which only happens roughly every twenty years, marked a shift in human values. As the pair met in Aquarius — an air sign — it means that we’re entering a less solid, more fast-paced era, where mankind will focus on human connection, collaboration, and prioritise quality communication.

From a career perspective, this means that more people will be exploring what’s important to them within their career, discovering their passion, and reconsidering how they can be their authentic self at work.

How long you spend using what’s written in the stars to help guide you on your way is up to the individual. Josephine can spend anything from one to two days on a Professional Blueprint Development session to 12-months working with a client — everyone is different. Her year-long Breakthrough + Transformation programme takes clients on a journey to connect with their abilities, discover how to feed their purpose, overcome self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviours, and transform by making choices and taking steps to create their ideal career future.
